Taxi regulator attends meeting in Waterford              contact: waterfordtaxiindustry@gmail.com

During a meeting in Waterford with local taxi reps on the 16 of July 2008 the regulator when
questioned about the current state of the taxi industry left reps with the feeling that this
women just does not care about the current hardship being felt in the industry.  Her visit
was on the 16th of July, but on the the evening of 15th of July the regulators enforcers were
on the ranks like the S.S clearing the way for a visit from Hitler.

When asked about the alarming amount of taxis being rented in Dublin and appearing on
Waterford ranks and the Social welfare fraud that was being linked to these licenses ,
She replied it was outside her remit and there was nothing she could do about it. When
it was suggested that she could stop this by introducing tax clearance certs yearly for all
in the industry, not just taxi owners, she replied it was not in her remit and nothing she
could do about it.  This begs the question what exactly is she being paid to do and like
the advert asking the public, What should taxi fares be, will we get an input into what
her salary will be in the coming years and is she indeed worth it ?

She might when considering any future taxi fare increases note that she is being paid
travel expenses that exceed the rate that taxi drivers get per mile and gets a salary
on top of that. My personal opinion is that this women will be leaving her position soon.
Putting taxi driers on the dole is exactly what the Government wants.

after an argument in his taxi.

not to work at night in fear of getting caught up in the dispute.

ploughs into the back of their 4x4..........probably on the phone ?


Proof that there are not too many Taxi's..

It was an add similar to the following one that the regulator provided as proof that there
were not too many taxis in Ireland. It was a company that a former Union Boss was
now director of and sitting Union officials are directors of. They claim to be looking
for an end to new licenses and yet make adverts like this one.

In Waterford we have a company with 157 taxis working from it, each paying €165
euro a week that's a staggering €25,000 a week paid to a company that owns nothing
but a telephone number.  €100.000 a month and over a million a year paid to a company
that employs but and handful of people and provides a useful telephone number.

Why wouldn't they be advertising for more cars? I am sure they are wetting their pants
in excitement as the regulator tries to force all cars into dispatch offices, As she says
it's easier to regulate 30 dispatch offices than 26.000 taxi's.

Silence from taxi unions on Lisbon treaty.

I have been left wondering why the taxi industry is so silent on the Lisbon treaty.
Normally they have a opinion on everything. There are 26.000 taxis in Ireland and
approximately 40.000 people holding a current psv license. That's rather a large
voting block. Why are they so silent?

An all party transport committee in April rather hurriedly called the taxi regulator
before it and demanded a report from her in September on the hardship currently
being felt in the taxi industry. It even went as far as calling for a cap on taxi numbers,
despite this being impossible under competition laws. Taxi drivers were left hanging
on the notion that a solution to this saturated market was near at hand. I know this
is a conspiracy theory, but have they stupidly been tricked into staying silent, not
wanting to upset the Government, while waiting on this report in September.
I certainly am starting to think so.

letter to Irish taxi regulator.

Would someone tell me what is going on in the taxi industry. Small cities and town are been
flooded with taxis which had originally worked in Dublin. In Waterford a lot of the new licenses
are on Corina's or 94 to 96 clapped out models which have been dumped on us from the Dublin
taxi industry. . On leaving Dublin they are not required to do a Nct before the new owner takes
over the license.

I have seen a wine Corina arrive on the taxi rank, It is a 94 model and it has parts from a
different car on its body. They did not even make an effort to spray the parts the same color.
It is wine with white parts. I am told this recently passed a nct here in Waterford.

We are receiving ex-Dublin wheelchair like the fiat Scuda that just arrived here, looks like
it was trough a war. This week a Mercedes Vito, like the scuda displaying scar marks all over
its body. All these plates are being dumped on new immigrants by the Dublin taxi market.
In recent weeks I have seen adds offering taxi for rent Nationwide. It looks like people are not
willing anymore to make major investments in new cars because of the uncertainty in
the industry. Renting is also been seen as an easy option, with no long term connection and
an ability to cut and run if necessary. We have fifteen plates for sale here in Waterford which
are being replaced weekly by part time drivers. How do you achieve a better standard by getting
rid of full time drivers and replacing them with part time drivers with no loyalty to the industry
who want to do as least hours as possible while making the maximum amount possible.

You are creating a race to the bottom. for the first time in years i have seen taxis drivers refuse
to do work from the rank which was going less that 1klm. They have been sitting on the rank for
two hours and along comes a €380 fare, how would you feel. The foreign drivers either don't know
English or don't know where the location is depending on where the customer is going. The amount
of customers being sent back to the next car is getting ridiculous.

 Deregulation of Taxi service has failed- time for rethink- Cullinane, Sinn Fein,

Speaking after a number of protests and strikes by Taxi drivers in Waterford and elsewhere
Sinn Féin Waterford City Councillor David Cullinane said that it was time for a real debate
about whether deregulation of the taxi industry had worked. He said deregulation has brought
about a real decline in income for drivers and a disproportionate number of taxis on the road.
Cllr Cullinane said: "Deregulation has led to a massive increase in the supply of taxis, increasing
by 377% between deregulation and the end of last year. The demand for taxis, however, has only
increased by 5%. There is a significantly larger volume of taxis competing for only a slightly
increased number of passengers. As a result, taxi drivers are being forced to work long hours,
which has other implications for road safety."

"The cost of running a taxi has not decreased but has increased by 8%. The figures I am quoting
do not do justice to the hardship suffered by taxi drivers and their families since deregulation.
They have been pushed to the edge and forced to work long hours. A review carried out on behalf
of the National Taxi Drivers' Union by Marketing and Strategic Management estimated that taxi
fare revenue has fallen by 20% since deregulation. Many families have been driven to the wall by
the Government's ill thought out deregulation policy.""Prior to 1983 21 American cities deregulated
taxi services. By 1993, 17 of them, including all major ones, had re regulated taxi services as none
of the promised beneficial effects had materialized. In 1990, Sweden deregulated and then
in 1995 effectively re-introduced regulation again. We need to seriously look at what the results
of deregulation have been." "Has the quality of service improved? Are there dangers from lack of
regulation about who is getting taxi licences? Are people safer using taxis now than they were
before de-regulation? It is unfortunate that it has taken protests and strikes by taxi drivers
in Waterford and other major cities to bring these important questions to the minister's attention.
He needs to take responsibility for this situation and answer these questions now."

3 IN 4 TAXI DRIVERS HAVE HYPERTENSION

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is thought to affect around 20% of adults worldwide.
However a recent survey of Irish taxi drivers found that 74% of them were affected. Furthermore the
survey found that just 12% of the drivers knew about their condition, while the majority were not
aware of what high blood pressure entails. High blood pressure can cause silent damage to the blood
vessels and heart. If left untreated, this damage progresses over time can cause a range of problems,
including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), stroke and heart failure. Over 100 taxi drivers
were randomly selected and tested for high blood pressure at Dublin Airport earlier this month. A blood
pressure measurement in excess of the internationally recognized goal of 140/90mmHg was considered
hypertensive. GP referrals were made where necessary. 

In response to the findings, the Irish Heart Foundation and the World Hypertension League is calling
for better awareness of the importance of patients reaching this goal or lower. "Almost 50% of Irish
deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases including, heart attack and stroke. Two-thirds of strokes
and half of heart attacks are attributable to non-optimal blood pressure control.
These figures concerning taxi drivers are exceedingly worrying", commented Dr Alice Stanton,
chair of the Irish Heart Foundation's council on high blood pressure. The foundation is planning a
public information campaign on blood pressure as part of its Irish Heart Week, which will take place
in September.

Adverts inviting submissions on taxi fares from the Irish public.

I was listening all day yesterday to adverts from the taxi
regulators office in which, submissions are invited from the
public on weather to increase taxi fares or to keep them the
same. What struck me was you don't hear calls for submissions
on air fares, bus fares, electricity, gas, television licenses,
bank charges or indeed anything involving big business. So could
someone explain the difference between these industries and the
taxi industry. Is it wealth and influence??

I believe these adverts are misleading the public, simply because
there is no way the general public would want to see any increase
in fares in any industry What consumer in there right mind would
argue putting up the cost of any service,even if needed or not, Yet
there going to see increases. When the last taxi fares were agreed
petrol and diesel were at 60+cent a liter, now petrol is €1.25 and
diesel is even more expensive . So who is fooling who here, If ever
i heard patronizing advert, this is it.

Does this regulator realize, To join Waterford's biggest taxi office
cost each driver €145.00 to €165.00 depending on whether you
advertise the office on your car. Thats €600 a month. More and
more cars just cant afford this. This office has 145 cars and gets
almost €85.000 a month for providing a phone and a handful of
staff, The drivers own all the cars. I wonder does the regulator
realize this as she puts pressure on drivers to join offices. And
were not stupid, the reason she wants us in offices is because its
easier to regulate offices than to regulate 20.000 different taxis.

Part time worker's in the taxi industry

Part time workers do two things . They eventually reduce the whole industry to that of a part time job. The more part timers, the less work for full time workers . Eventually all driver's will be forced into getting second jobs. Secondly they bring no loyalty to the industry, there just there for a quick buck. In an effort to make quick money they cut corners, unlike other drivers there not concerned with repeat business and are not Dependant on the business . The problem is when a taxi industry is facing saturation those most suited to weather any storms are part time workers with a second job, not unfortunately the full time taxi drivers with loyalties to their industry.
